Amy Schick’s Geologic Systems class was challenged with coming up with ways to get involved with and learn about making a positive impact on the climate and their world. Students chose to investigate alternate ways to grow food. This challenge led students to study hydroponics and aquaponics.
“Hydroponics is growing plants using only water and aquaponics is growing stuff using the water that fish live in,” explained Mia, a student in Amy’s class. Mia used the white hydroponic tower (pictured) to grow plants and measured the growth over time. The aquaponic tanks students used are in a greenhouse/shed behind the building where fish are kept and their water feeds the plants. The ASK program is also conducting experiments in the greenhouse with growing plants using aquaponics.
The students involved in the investigations into hydroponics and aquaponics were enthused about the hands-on aspect of learning about these methods while they appreciated working on real-world problems and solutions.
