Over two afternoons on April 2 and 3, students from Triumph’s English 12 class rolled up their sleeves for a painting project and added some color to the walls of the Welcome Mat, a shelter associated with the Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless.
One of Cheyenne’s day shelters, the Welcome Mat offers material and resource support for the unhoused in the area.
The students were transported to the facility in shifts, where they used brushes, rollers, and their Triumph, Discovery communication skills to get the new colors on the walls in preparation for upcoming flooring improvements.
As a nonprofit surviving on donations, the Welcome Mat had the painting supplies but not the energetic bodies to repaint their welcoming rooms; fortunately, Triumph’s youth were the perfect solution. The manager of the Welcome Mat, Christine Herron, has a Triumph connection through her son, enrolled student Zack Vetter, so the commitment to collaborate was forged through Triumph’s quarterly Parent-Teacher Conference, wherein Zack’s advisor and English 12 teacher, Justin Earnshaw, volunteered student workers.
“The senior class mission of ‘promoting Triumph and our culture in the community’ is a perfect fit for these types of volunteerism”, Earnshaw said.
The English 12 class is on the lookout for additional volunteer opportunities – interested nonprofits and community organizations are welcome to reach out with ideas and tasks that could benefit from the motivated and mindful Triumph senior class.
